Getting There

By plane

ANA and JAL fly from Tokyo 's Haneda Airport to Hakodate . One-way fare for the 1 1/4-hour trip is ¥23,900 to ¥28,500 ($199-$238), depending on the season.

By train

From Tokyo , you could take the Shinkansen bullet train "Hayate" to Hachinohe (3 hr.) then transfer to a direct train for Hakodate (about 3 hr.). For a reserved seat, the total fare is ¥18,930 ($158).

Another way is to take the night train that departs Ueno Station in Tokyo around 7pm, arriving in Hakodate the next morning at 6:30am. This costs ¥21,000 ($175). You can save a lot if you have a JR Rail Pass paying only a ¥9,450 ($79) sleeping-car surcharge. From Sapporo , Hakodate is only about 3 1/2 hours.

By boat

Hakodate is a major port. Major operator Higashi-Nihon Ferry [1] offers frequent services to Aomori (3:40, ¥1850) and less frequent services to Oma (1:40, ¥1170) on the remote Shimokita Peninsula . The main ferry terminal is 4 km from the center and reachable on buses 1 and 19.

Get Around

Hakodate has a useful two-line tram network connected to the train station.
