Okinawa Main Island ( Okinawa Honto) the former center of the Ryukyu Kingdom , is one of the three major island groups making up the prefecture of Okinawa and the largest of Ryukyu Islands . The Okinawa Islands ( Okinawa Shoto) are a group of about two dozen islands around Okinawa Main Island (Okinawa-Honto).
Okinawa Prefecture has its capital on Okinawa -Honto at Naha . As well as the home to more than half of the prefecture's population and the US Military Bases. It is the prefecture's busiest and most developed island.
The Okinawan Islands collectively are world-famous for two known aspects. It is known as the origin and birthplace of its most famous export worldwide which is Karate. It is also speculated to be the main reason why the U.S. during World War - II eventually decided to drop the Atomic Bombs in two cities in Japan, as the fierce opposition and zealous defense against the attacking US Forces created such horrendous casualties for both sides in the Battle of Okinawa with the scene in Iwo Jima being the most famous.
