In Kokura, one will find the reconstructed Kokura-jo Castle . Built in the mid-sixteenth century, it was the base of the Ogasawara family until they abandoned it in the 1800's, and was left to the elements. In 1956, it was restored in its original style and was turned into a museum for the ward. It now holds a scale model of Kokura as it was in the 17 th century, complete with more than a thousand paper figures.
In contrast to the ancient wonder that is Kokura-jo, the Kitakyushu Sapce Center is a showcase of modern technology. The theme-park has the " Space Park ," a space training facility where teens and children can pretend to be astronauts in training. It also has the Big Bang Plaza that can accommodate 1,200 seats.
