Discover Mito
Mito City is the Capital of Ibaraki Prefecture on the central
part of Honshu, Japan’s largest island. The city has an
estimated total area of 176 square kilometres, and a resident
population of over 240,000 people. Mito traces its roots from
the Yamato people who settled in the area during the 4th Century.
One of the most historical places in the city is Mito Castle,
a hotly contested piece of realty during the feudal period of
Japan, changing ownership many times in the course of its history
up until the end of the Edo Period.
Today, Mito City is a thriving business and government administrative
center for the prefecture. It also has a relatively small yet
growing tourist industry focused mainly on one of Japan’s
most famous parks, Kairakuen Park.
