Yokohama has been a happy home for large numbers of foreigners ever since its port was first opened in 1859. The city's long multicultural history is reflected in its many facilities that cater to the foreign community, such as international schools, Chinatown, churches, fashionable shopping malls and an athletics club that originated from a cricket club established by British expatriates in the 19th century.

Education facilities

In Yokohama, the children of foreign residents can study at any of nine international schools or the city's public schools.
