Table Manners
Before starting to eat, in Japan, you should
say "itadakimasu" which means "I gratefully
receive" and "gochisosama deshita" at the end
of the meal extending your appreciation for the repast to your
host or server.
It is normal in some Asian culture to share
the food served on the table, the Japanese are no different
in this aspect.
One is expected to serve him self from the
serving dish with the provided serving spoon or use the thicker
or the opposite
end of his chopsticks to transfer food to his own plate.
Avoid
blowing your nose in public, and especially during meals,
for it is considered bad manner. Talking about toilet
related
and similarly "dirty" topics during or before
a meal is not appreciated by most people. Burping after
meals
to signify
satisfaction is not appreciated in Japan, unlike in some
other parts of East Asia.
It is also a must to consume
every grain of rice on your bowl or plate. So be wary
of getting too much rice servings.
It
is alright to add whenever you still fell hungry and
be able to
present a clean plate to your host after the meal.
After
meals, arrange the food implements in the same way as they
were at the start of the meal. This includes
replacing
the covers
of tableware and replacing chopsticks on the chopstick
holder or into their paper slip.
