Elements of Quality
The quality of an authentic Japanese fan comes from the harmony
of Japan's traditional raw materials and the painstaking process
involved in making a single fan.
Sometimes, the number of ribs used can be a gauge for quality. The
more number of ribs used, the higher the quality, but such is
not always the case. The use of a paper called gampi, made
of plant fibers and available only in Japan, can also be a measure
of quality. The traditional raw materials used by the Japanese
fan makers are known for its durability even if opened and folded
for an unlimited number of times.
Hand-painted designs are usually used, showing the labor and
great care that goes into creating a Japanese fan.
