Glossary

Uechi-Ryu – founded by Kanbun Uechi, this style puts emphasis on the toughness of the body with quick and effective hand and foot strikes

Shotokai – this karate style focuses on slow flowing movements and has controlled attacks to lower the chances of injury

Shorinjiryu – a karate style that focuses on speed and mobility

Genseiryu – developed by Seiken Shukumine, this style combines classic techniques with Shukumine’s own techniques

Kata – a Japanese word that describes the detailed patterns of defense and attack movements

Dojo – a training facility for martial arts

Kyu – a Japanese term used to designate levels of proficiency and/or experience
