Word Origins

The word ninja is derived from the Japanese phrase shinobi no mono. This phrase is written with two Kanji (Chinese) characters, pronounced ren-zhe in Mandarin. The first character, the same one used for ninjutsu, means endurance. The second character means person.

The ninja are sometimes referred to in another Chinese term "Lin Gui" meaning "demons of the forests" for the beliefs of possessing mystical powers.
