There are many Japanese artists who have molded this fine art to perfection. It was in Muromachi period when the Japanese started to open their senses to art when they started trading with the Chinese. In the Momoyama period, art began to enter homes of opulent Japanese families with fusuma (large Japanese screen doors) paintings. Artists like Shobun were masters of this art.

Most of famous Japanese artists have emerged in the Edo period where print making was popularized. Ukiyo-e or print making is the art of mass-producing artworks such that paintings were affordable for anyone who appreciated art. The most famous Japanese artist, Hokusai, came from this period.

Today, many contemporary Japanese artists have from evolved the traditional Japanese art, mixing it with Western style. Still, there are a great number of present-day Japanese artists who have continued the legacy of their ancestors.
