Applying for a Visa

In applying for Visa, documents are submitted to the Japanese Embassy who will check if all the requirements have been met. When requirements are complete, the embassy would issue the visa to the applicant. The process, however, does not end here. After receiving the visa, the applicant would then submit his application for a landing permission to the Port of Entry. The process is completed once the landing permission has been issued to the visitor.

Visa application can be classified into two: short-term stays and long-term stays. Short term stays would require visitor either a transit visa or a temporary visa. The validity of visas for short-term stays usually lasts up to 90 days. Activities such as sightseeing, visits to relatives or friends, participation in athletic meets, friendship visits and business trips would normally require short-term stay visas.

Work and Long-term stay visas include diplomatic visa, official visa, working visa, general visa or specified visa. Among these only the working visa would permit the visitor to work in Japan. Studying in Japan would also grant visitors long-term stays in Japan. However, visa issued for students would not permit them to work in the country. In case that the applicant’s spouse is of Japanese nationality, the embassy would also allow the applicant to acquire long-term stay visa.

During visa application, it is advisable to obtain a Certificate of Eligibility for easier and faster processing of the visa.
