Discover Japanese Ceramics

With the country’s abundant supply of raw product and it’s very diverse history of learning different techniques, glazes and finishes, Japanese ceramics are overwhelmingly of wide range. Some of it are even very affordable.

In day to day use Japanese ceramic bowls add to the food presentation.  Bowls in every size, as well as tea cups and pots, serve as plates or containers for serving rice wine (sake), sushi, platters and other Japanese food.

Archeological findings show that Japanese pottery is among the oldest in the world, going as far back as the Jumon period (11BC). Yaki, Japanese for porcelain and pottery, has always been regarded as a successfully distinctive art form. In the past, when Japan isolated itself from the world during the Edo period (1603-1868), porcelain exports to the West were a significant factor in that period’s economy.

Although influenced by Chinese and Korean porcelain, Japanese potteries carry its own distinctive style and have always remained dominant in the world market even up to this day.  Students and art experts of today continue to study the aesthetics and learn the techniques of Japanese ceramic art. The Japanese craft of pottery has made a profound influence in the art community outside of Japan.
