Discover Japanese Furniture

Furniture has never been a focal point of the Japanese decorative arts. Japan was one of the few civilizations that did not develop many specialized furniture forms. It has utilized little furniture and used the interior architecture of the house to satisfy the aesthetic and social requirements that furniture has served in many societies.

Japanese furniture is all about storage and portability. Minimal furniture is required in a Japanese household, with space at a premium in Japanese homes. The primary requirement for the furniture forms that were developed was that they be easily movable, so that rooms could be multifunctional.
