The Modern Japanese Home

These days, many Japanese live in buildings called apato. These are old buildings developed into apartments to fill the housing needs of a growing Japanese population. Larger apartments are referred to as mashon (mansion). They are more expensive but comfortable than regular apartments.

Some apartments have tatami floors or carpets. Typical apartment units include any of these:

1K - one room apartment with kitchen
1DK - one room apartment with dining and kitchen area
1LDK - one room apartment with a living, dining and kitchen area

They also come with a separate toilet and bath and a genkan area is almost always present.
