Tips when Visiting a Home in Japan
Some things to remember when visiting a Japanese
home:
- Remember
to respect tradition by removing your shoes before you
enter the house.
- Upon
removing footwear, align your shoes together and leave
them neatly on the provided area, with the tip of the shoe
facing the door
- Gifts
show some kind of appreciation for your host. No matter
how big or small it is, your host will have high regard for
you if you bring them gifts.
- Many
modern Japanese homes have Western chairs and sofas but
sometimes meals are taken the traditional way --- in low tables
with cushions. If this should happen, remember that men may
sit crossed legged but women are not allowed to do it. Women
instead should sit with both legs tucked under them or to one
side.
- The
raised floor in the alcove display must not be stepped
on. It
is considered a family altar. Also, it would be gracious
to say something about the displays found in the alcove.
