Owner Responsibilities

Every year, the local city government (for a small fee) provides canines and felines with vaccinations against rabies and other diseases between April and June. Pets acquired outside of these dates should still be vaccinated, and this may be done at any veterinarian’s clinic.

Aside from regular check ups, pet owners also need to contend with the restrictions imposed by landlords. Most apartments / condominium units in Japan forbid tenants from having pets because pets smell; they dirty the property and can also be quite noisy. Tenants who secretly maintain pets have led to many a conflict with irate neighbors.
