Traditional card games abound in Japan . Some games use the standard international pack while others require the use of flower cards, or Hanafuda. They also have cards based on the old Portuguese design. These cards almost became nonexistent but are now considered a cultural tradition. The Japanese have what is called 100 Poets. This pack consists of 200 cards. Poems are printed on 100 of them while poets are seen in the other hundred. Various games can be played using the different cards.
Perhaps one of the most well-known Japanese games these days is Sudoku. The popularity of this game has reached such proportions that the New Oxford English Dictionary almost chose this word to be the word of the year in 2005. Sudoku is also known as "number place." It is basically a game that tests your logic using numbers. Today, it would be rare to find a person around the world who has not at least heard of this game. In fact, the first ever world Sudoku championship was just held in March 2006 in Lucca , Italy .
