There are some fundamental guidelines rules that must be observed before engaging to shiatsu. These are the following:

Dress in comfortable and loose fit clothes made up of natural fibers so that it will facilitate with the flow of energy.

The massage room must be quiet, warm, with enough space and neat and clean. If this is not observed the flow of energy is unfavorably affected.

The person to be massaged must be lying in a quilted Japanese mattress or any mat of similar type. The person must feel comfortable. Adding of pillows or cushions may be come in necessary.

People who have just eaten should not engage in the massage. Allow for several hours to pass before receiving shiatsu.

Pressure must not be applied on injuries such as cuts or varicose veins or fractures.

For pregnant women, the stomach, any part of the legs from the knees downwards, the fleshy web of skin between the forefinger and thumb, and an area on the shoulders at each side of the neck must not be applied with pressure.

The person must be calm and relaxed before receiving the massage.

People with grave illnesses like heart disorders, cancer or multiple sclerosis are generally not advised to undergo shiatsu.

An accurate and intricate diagnosis and course of treatment of subjects are essential.

A verbal interview on the person's total health disposition is a must and also to verify if a woman is pregnant.
