Business attire

The other thing to remember is how you would appear to your Japanese counterparts. Looking good always makes a big impression.

  • Men should look their best in dark business suits. However, avoid black suites, white shirt and black tie as these should be reserved only for funerals.
  • Japanese employers disallow beards or a completely shaved-head. So it is not wise to go to business meetings looking this way.
  • It is only acceptable for men to have ponytails if they are managers of a software or internet company.
  • If you must wear a Kimono, remember to wrap them left over right. Doing it the other way around symbolizes death.
  • Women should have minimal accessories. They should also avoid high heeled shoes that would make them tower over the men.
