Gift giving

Gift-giving is an important way to seal in your business relationship with your contact. Whether in Japan or in any part of the world, this gesture more than establishes a good impression.

Inform your clients of the gifts beforehand. Do not intend for it as a surprise. Steer clear of white wrapping paper as the color signifies death. Just like with business cards, accept or give gifts with both hands.

Typically, gifts are given at the end of the meeting and opening it should be done after. But if your host gives you one and insist you open it at once, do so graciously.

Great gift ideas include: top choice beef, wine and fruit. Items from high-end stores are also good.
