Business over dinner

Japanese very rarely entertain in the home. If this should happen, consider this with tremendous honor and appreciation. Remember to remove your shoes when entering a Japanese home. In most cases, slippers are provided for guest, so accept these graciously.

On the other hand, most business deals are completed over dinners in restaurants, sometimes in Karaoke bars. Take note that the Japanese are not fond of “going Dutch” as they often insist on picking the tab, you being a guest of their country. Consequently, allow your host to pick dinner or order the meal.

When non-alcoholic beverages are served before the meal, as it usually happens, remember to drink only after the head of the hosting party has taken a sip from his glass, before you start with yours.

Keep in mind that drinking is an important part of Japanese culture as it is a stress-reliever. If you don’t indulge in this, turning down the offer might lessen your chances of making a good impression.

In Japan, slurping noodles is a perfectly accepted behavior. It will let your Japanese host know that you are enjoying your dinner and the current company.
