Bow or shake hands?
One thing that worries both Japanese and foreigners
when meeting for business is whether to bow or shake hands.
Oddly, this is only realized by both parties when they are
already facing of each other, resulting to an awkward pause.
Although
it is very common for companies to mandate their employees
to go through a training that will ensure that they will
know how to conduct themselves during business meetings, a
foreigner
is often not expected to understand every aspect of Japanese
business practices.
A simple but sincere nod of the head followed
by firm handshake is probably the best way to show your respect
for the counterparty. The most important thing that you should
remember in dealing with Japanese business men is that even
though you are a guest, you are still in their country and
you should conduct yourself in such a manner that will make
you acceptable to the new environment that you are settling
in. After all, business is still business, but it wont hurt
to be liked by your associates.
