Visiting other offices

In conducting business with other business men, there are times when you will have to visit them in their office, especially if you are the one seeking to speak with the other, or if it is simply more convenient.

When coming in for an appointment in the office of a business associate, chances are you will be asked to wait in a meeting room. Japanese offices have these rooms to entertain as well as conduct business meetings. These meeting rooms usually have four or more chairs set around a table. Here, you will be asked if you want anything to drink while waiting for the meeting to start. As the honored guest, you it is customary for you to sit on the chair farthest from the door, while the host will have to sit nearest the door.

This practice reflects the concept that guests and visitors should be treated with utmost respect while the hosts should attend to their every need. This gesture is also done in restaurants, bars, taxis, and other like situations. On the other hand, if you are the one receiving guests, you will have to treat your guests politely, while minding their every need. When other people come into the room, you should stand up, bow or shake hands with that person.
