Drinking

The Japanese custom for bonding with friends is to go drinking and share a few rounds. If you are invited out, your host or the inviting party commonly foots the bill. Do not start drinking until all at the table have been served and the glasses are raised for the traditional salute “Kampai!” Other toasts such as “Cheers!” are ok, but avoid using the Italian “Chin chin!” as this closely resembles the Japanese expression for male genitals. When drinking in a group, it is Japanese custom to serve each other rather than pour drinks into your own glass. You must periodically check your friend’s cups and refill them once the get empty. Also, when someone wants to serve you drinks, you must immediately empty your cup and hold it toward that person.
