The House of Representatives has 480 members
who are elected to serve terms of up to four years. Three hundred
representatives are elected directly from 300 electoral districts.
The other 180 are chosen under a system called proportional
representation, which gives a political party a share in the
Diet according to its share of the total votes cast.
