Supreme Court
The Supreme Court is the nation’s highest
court. It consists of 1 chief justice and 14 associate justices.
The Cabinet names,
and the Emperor appoints, the chief justice. The Cabinet appoints
the associate justices. Every 10 years, the people have an opportunity
to remove a justice from the court by voting in a referendum.
The
Supreme Court oversees the training of Japan’s judges
and attorneys. It also administers the national system of courts.
The court system includes 8 regional high courts; 50 district
courts; many summary courts, which handle minor offences and
small claims without the formal procedures of other courts;
and numerous family courts, which handle domestic cases.
