Supernatural superstitions
The Japanese, in fact, believe in their ghosts.
These ghosts that they believe in have their particular personalities
and manner of spooking people. Some terminology for ghosts
in Japan would be “obake”, “bakemono”, “youkai”,
and “yuurei”. A “youkai” would mean
an entrancing apparition. Goblins, ghouls and monsters fall
under this category. The "yuurei", on the other hand,
is dim, murky and faint spirit.
The Japanese believe that these
are dead spirits living on earth for some intention. A female
monster with a long, flexible neck is known as a "rokurobi".
The Japanese maintain that this monster looks like any normal
woman in the day, but at night, she drains all energy from
them and they die. The Japanese also believe that female ghosts
return in taxis and other ghosts return as cats.
Also, the Japanese
believe that one's pillow should not face north, as this
is the position of the dead body at a Buddhist
funeral. Three people should not be in a picture together because
they believe that the center person will suffer a terrible
tragedy or even die. People also cover their mirrors at night
as they
are afraid that a woman from another world might come and take
them there forever.
