Geisha Books

Geishas are one of the very popular symbols associated with Japan . Literally meaning art person, a geisha is a traditional Japanese artist-entertainer. They flourished in the 18 th and 19 th centuries and though some still exist today, their numbers are not as big as they used to be.

Geishas evoke such curiosity in the minds of many people and a lot of literature exists to satisfy this curiosity. Perhaps the most prominent book today would be the novel by Arthur Golden, Memoirs of a Geisha. There are other books featuring geishas, their history and their art. Here are some well recommended books about Geishas:

  • Geisha by Liza Dalby. The author is an American anthropologist who became a geisha n Kyoto .
  • Geisha - The Life, the Voices, and the Art by Ian Buruma. This book features pictures of geishas by Jodi Cobb.
  • Yoshiwara : The Glittering World of the Japanese Courtesan by Cecilia S. Seigle. Clears up the connection between geishas and prostitution.
