Miyaki Issey
Famous abroad for his Issey Miyake labels, this
designer was born in Hiroshima Prefecture in 1935. A Tama University
of Arts graduate in Graphic Design, he established the Miyake
Design studio in 1970. By the early 80’s Miyake opened
a design company in France and United States.
His basic principle
for designing has always been innovative and unconventional,
often merging tradition, handicraft and
new technology into his works. His creations are usually
displayed in theaters and museums.
In 2004, he established
Miyake Issey Foundation, which aimed to train aspiring designers
of the Miyake principle to create
clothing from a single piece of thread.
Pleats Please, his
ready to wear collection, is his very popular brand. His
clientele include artists, designers
and architects.
