Yamamoto Yohji

Yamamoto Yohji is a graduate of both Keio University and Bunka Fashion College. He started out as designer for women’s clothing and set up his company, Y’s in 1977.

He is known for his style of making women’s clothing using men’s garments in basic black, navy and white. This makes it both functional and classical. Eventually he created a men’s line of designer clothes.

In 1984 he presented his first Yohji Yamamoto pour Homme collection in Paris, France.

His also makes costumes for opera houses and ballet conservatories all over the world.

Awards and Recognition:

  • Only Japanese fashion designer to have been awarded the French Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres.
  • Mainichi Fashion Grand Prize (1986)
