One of the most recent successes in Japanese exports is in the movie industry. In the year 2004, Japanese movie exports grossed $60 million in sales. The Japanese movie industry has seen a boon in the last decade or so due to increased interest in the martial arts, and the latest movie and television craze to come out of Japan; Anime.

Although anime simply means “animation” in Japan, people in other countries have come to relate the phrase to Japan’s unique style of animation. The phrase “Japanimation” was also coined to refer to Japanese anime movies and television shows. From the colorful and cute characters in the Japanese children’s shows to the intricate plots and adventurous anime movies for the older crowd, the Japanese movie and television production industry has shown remarkable growth as an export.
