Castles

Castles have always evoked a mixture of awe, adventure, and romance in people. Perhaps that is why castles have always been popular tourist spots. Japan has numerous castles scattered all over the country, which tourists can visit.

The earliest castles in Japan were built in the 15 th century. The need for castles arose due to the numerous warring factions. Different families needed strongholds and thus built castles on mountaintops. When Japan became a united country, the purpose and locations of castles changed. Larger castles were then normally built in plains and served as centers of administration.

The structure of different castles may vary depending on the area and time of construction. One thing that they all have in common is their magnificence. Japanese castles are of a different "breed" from the castles one normally sees in the Western world.
