Ryokan & Minshuku
Staying at a Ryokan ("traveler’s
inn) and minshuku ("people's accommodation") will
give you a total Japanese lifestyle experience, so if you're
a tourist who wants to experience different cultures, this
is the place for you. Ryokan and minshuku are often found in
rural or resort areas of Japan.
Included in your “total
Japan experience” would be sleeping on a tatami mat floors
on a futon, wearing a Japanese kimono called yukata, and bathing
with other guests in a traditional Japanese bathing facility.
Even toilets are traditional Japanese comfort rooms, which
are very different to western style johns. You can also experience
a traditional home cooked Japanese breakfast of fish, seaweed,
rice, pickles, and miso soup.
Since ryokan and minshuku are
often operated by a single family who doesn’t speak any
English, you can still feel the warmth of their hospitality
just the same. Prices are usually at 3,000 Yen per person,
but it may vary depending on the area and the amenities they
offer.
