Festival of Lanterns (Obon)
Japan’s summer season is most famous for Obon or the Festival
of Lanterns, which depending on lunar calendar is held in July
or August. It is believed that during Obon, ancestors and departed
loved ones return home, and to light their way through the night,
lanterns are lit. During this festival, offerings such as sake,
rice cakes and fruits are also offered. Celebration of this festival
is also accompanied by flute and drums while special dances known
as Bon Odori are also performed.
